The digital transformation of THIR: A success story

THIR, we move. Digitalisation as a new success factor.

Hürm, March 2024

Two years ago, THIR was faced with a challenge: how can we manage our mixed fleet and our attachments even better? The solution was obvious - digital mapping and management of all mobile objects. But how could this be realised? THIR took up the challenge and began to follow a path that would ultimately lead them to success.
And so began the exciting story of a company that has been "moving" the future together with Rosenberger Telematics ever since.

THIR GmbH & Co KG in Hürm is an established family business with a wide range of services. With 60 years of experience, the company can draw on a solid base of specialist knowledge and expertise in the fields of earthworks, horticulture, clearing, building demolition, concrete tracks, paving, gravel works, transport and vehicle technology. A mixed fleet of 80 vehicles and a team of 100 motivated employees equipped with high-quality equipment are the success factors for the company.

THIR, we move. Digitalisation as a new success factor.

It was obvious. With activities in the fleet and on the various construction sites constantly running in parallel, we had to think about how to better manage the amount of machinery and high-quality equipment. Over time, the organisation of the equipment on the construction sites became increasingly opaque. Planning and organising maintenance cycles was time-consuming. Administration was tedious and characterised by dependencies. The solution was therefore obvious: telematics.

The following points were important to THIR GmbH in advance.

  • An unrestricted overview of the vehicle fleet and all construction sites, including machines and attachments. Thanks to the GPS signal, it should be possible to allocate all vehicles, construction tracks and attachments or equipment to a specific zone at any time in near real time. In this way, it would always be possible to determine what is available on a construction site or has possibly been forgotten.
  • Operating hours and kilometre readings could be called up remotely and used to plan maintenance cycles. It should no longer be necessary to enquire by telephone or read off the vehicle in person.
  • Illegal start-ups and idling should be recognised in order to be able to react accordingly

As THIR GmbH & Co KG operates its own vehicle workshop, where maintenance and repair work is also carried out on its own vehicles, they were predestined for rapid realisation and implementation.

The highest level of expertise despite versatility - this was also sought in his counterpart.

When the topic of telematics came up almost 2 years ago, it was inevitable that we would also enquire with Rosenberger Telematics. The company has made a name for itself in the industry and is known for its uncomplicated and rapid implementation.
THIR not only had a mixed fleet to equip, but also a large amount of expensive equipment that was constantly changing construction sites.  A complete package of various telematics products was therefore put together to provide the optimum solution. Depending on the requirements of the project, intelligent telematics hardware was provided for vehicles and machines and less intelligent hardware for smaller, but still high-quality equipment. This not only provided a comprehensive overview of the entire fleet of vehicles and machinery, but also enabled costs and time to be saved at various points.

For this reason, the decision was made to work with Rosenberger Telematics. In addition to the criteria defined and implemented by THIR for analyses and verifiability, the company also benefited in other areas. Communication with employees in the field became simpler and more precise. This also applied to communication with the customer! Precise forecasts of arrival times and real-time information further increased customer satisfaction. Monitoring made it possible to identify optimisation potential and reduce empty runs. Better capacity utilisation led to cost savings of around 20%.

"Telematics is indispensable today."

The company found an experienced and reliable partner in Rosenberger Telematics. They quickly agreed on the scope and began installing over 100 telematics units. With the help of the service app, all objects were quickly digitalised. The predefined installation process simplified and accelerated the installation considerably. In addition, online real-time diagnostics via the app resulted in an error rate of zero.

Once installed, it is already being sent. In the background, everything was prepared for a smooth handover to THIR. All devices were recorded in Commander, the Rosenberger Telematics user portal, and the management level for user and role allocation was set up. The data sent by the hardware is visualised and can be viewed and evaluated in real time or as historical data.

"The Commander is so intuitive to use that everyone in the building enjoys working with it. It has become indispensable today. All our construction sites and our vehicle fleet are digitally recorded and provide data for scheduling and the workshop. It saves us an incredible amount of time as we can always call up the current location and machine data status," emphasises Mr Gerhard Thir, Managing Director of THIR GmbH & Co KG.

THIR has undergone a successful digital transformation in close collaboration with Rosenberger Telematics. By using telematics, the company can better organise and manage its fleet, workshop and construction sites. This project is an outstanding example of how digital technologies can help to increase a company's efficiency and productivity. Time savings of more than 50% have been achieved in property management.
