Deadline for new registrations: 21 August 2023
From 21 August 2023, Smart Tacho 2 will be mandatory for all newly registered trucks and buses. Why is this necessary? Smart Tacho 2 enables the automatic recording of location data when crossing borders and every time the vehicle is loaded or unloaded. It also records whether the vehicle is being used for the carriage of goods or passengers.
But that's not all: Smart Tacho 2 also transmits data via remote communication that is required for targeted roadside checks of vehicles with suspected manipulated or misused tachographs. A new addition is data on exceeding the maximum driving time.
With the Smart Tacho 2, all information on compliance with driving and rest times and the safety of passengers and freight is automatically recorded and can be quickly retrieved in the event of an inspection. So if you want to buy a new commercial vehicle by the deadline of 21 August 2023, you should definitely make sure that it is equipped with a Smart Tacho 2.
New registrations between 2006 and 2019: Everything you need to know!
If you registered a new vehicle between June 2006 and June 2019, it should be fitted with a 1st generation speedometer. From June 2019, all new registrations were already equipped with the 2nd generation - the Smart Tacho. By the end of the year, all 'digital speedometers' (analogue + Gen1.1-1.3) must be replaced. By August 2025, all commercial vehicles must be retrofitted with Smart Tacho 1 (Gen 2.1) - and from July 2026, the obligation will apply to vehicles over 2.5 tonnes (LNV in cross-border traffic).
